The Heart of a King

Spoiler alert: David was a great king, but boy was he flawed.

David was anointed king by God, by way of Samuel. He wasn’t elected, voted or nominated. He was hand-picked by God, and yet…he was a sinner.

In 1 Samuel, we learned that God doesn’t care about riches, class or looks. The Lord looks at the heart." — 1 Samuel 16:7

David’s story is full of faith, doubt, despair, repentance and dependence on the Lord. It’s proof that God doesn’t need us to be perfect, He wants us to know that we are not, and depend on Him because of it.

David knew he didn’t know how to be king, and so he leaned exactly where he should — on God. And because of it, God rewarded him.

Through David, we know that the heart of a king isn’t prideful, vengeance-obsessed or self-led. It’s humble, faithful, repenting and waiting on God.
