February: A Call to Obedience

Last words.

In movies and on tv, and even in books, the last words of a main character are given much importance. They’re often the words the rest of the cast clings and lives their lives according to, going forward.

How many of us have considered what our last words would be? If you knew the day or time you would pass and you had time to prepare, what would your final message be — to your friends, to your family, to the world?

Moses’ last words were all about obedience.

Could it be that in knowing his days were numbered and he would never enter the Promise Land, he wanted to warn the Israelites not to miss out on God’s promises as he would?

Could it be that his closeness to God made him more aware of the need to obey Him?

Could it be that he simply understood that a God would never broke His promises, always protected and provided for His people, and rendered judgement fairly, was worthy of being obedient to?

Perhaps all of the above.

For the month of February, we’ll study the fifth and final book of the Pentateuch — Deuteronomy — and continue the Israelite’s journey as they prepare to exit the wilderness and Moses’ final plea to them to renew their covenant with God and hold up their end of the bargain by being obedient to him.
